When to start brushing

You should start brushing before your baby’s teeth erupt. You can clean your child’s gums with a soft infant toothbrush or cloth and water. Once teeth begin to appear, start brushing twice daily with a soft, age-appropriate sized toothbrush. We recommend that you assist your child’s tooth brushing until at least age 8. Remember that young children do not have the skill to brush their teeth effectively. It is more important to brush their teeth to remove food and bacteria than it is to use toothpaste. If you use toothpaste, apply a smear or pea-size amount to minimize their exposure to fluoride.
